The Origin of the Market
According to local stories, the market originated from a few women who regularly sold their food items at the same spot on the street. Over the years, more and more locals joined them with their products, gradually forming a small market. This market continued to grow and expand, eventually evolving into the bustling marketplace we see today.
Near the beach, many fish are dried in the sun to extend their shelf life. Throughout Tanji, you’ll see wicker mats spread out with various types of fish laid out to dry. Particularly noteworthy are the smoking houses, where masses of bonga fish are smoked. This spectacle is incredibly photogenic, thanks to the enchanting rays of light that cut through the smoky air.
